Hajj Badal

What is Hajj Badal?

Hajj Badal is performing the pilgrimage on behalf of someone permanently unable to perform it, or on behalf of someone who died without performing it while being financially able.

Conditions for a valid delegation

  1. 1

The represented person must be Muslim

Proxy pilgrimage is valid only on behalf of a Muslim.

  2. 2

    Permanent incapacity or death

They must have died, or be permanently unable to travel due to chronic illness or old age.

  3. 3

Hajj must have become obligatory on them

They were financially able during their lifetime, so the obligation settled upon them.

  4. 4

The proxy must have performed their own Hajj

Per the hadith: "Perform Hajj for yourself, then perform it for Shubrumah" — we verify this for every proxy.

  5. 5

    Intention of proxy at Ihram

The proxy must intend the Hajj specifically for the represented person when entering Ihram.

  6. 6

Money must not be the objective

The proxy must intend worship; what they receive is an expense and a wage for effort, not a trade.

The rulings summarised here are for general guidance. Every case is reviewed by the foundation's Sharia committee before a delegation is approved.

About Hajj Badal

Frequently asked questions

Is Hajj on behalf of the deceased valid?

Yes. Ibn Abbas reported that a woman from Juhaynah asked the Prophet ﷺ: "My mother vowed to perform Hajj but died before doing so — shall I perform it for her?" He said: "Yes, perform Hajj for her. Had your mother owed a debt, would you not have repaid it? Repay what is owed to Allah, for Allah is more deserving of fulfilment." (Bukhari)

Must the proxy have performed their own Hajj first?

Yes — this is the origin of the app's name. The Prophet ﷺ heard a man say "Labbayk on behalf of Shubrumah" and asked "Who is Shubrumah?" The man said "a brother" or "a relative of mine." He asked: "Have you performed Hajj for yourself?" He said no. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Perform Hajj for yourself, then perform it for Shubrumah." (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah)

May a proxy be paid for performing Hajj?

Receiving expenses and what covers the proxy's needs is permissible; ideally the pilgrimage should not be undertaken for the money. Turning it into a trade for profit is disliked according to the majority of scholars, and Shubrumah regulates this with a capped fee and its endorsement process.

Must the proxy be from the same country as the represented person?

No — what matters is that the Islamic conditions are met. Many delegators nonetheless prefer a proxy who shares their language, to make communication and following the rites easier.

Is proxy Hajj valid for a living sick person?

Yes, if the incapacity is permanent with no expected recovery — such as chronic illness or old age preventing them from remaining on a mount — per the hadith of the Khath'amiyyah woman who said: "Allah's obligation of Hajj upon His servants has reached my father as an elderly man who cannot remain on a mount — shall I perform Hajj for him?" He said: "Yes." (Agreed upon)

May a woman perform Hajj on behalf of a man?

Yes, according to the majority of scholars — a woman may perform it for a man and vice versa, per the hadith of the Khath'amiyyah woman who performed Hajj for her father. Shubrumah currently operates with a group of male proxies.
